Qualifications

Interdisciplinary and collaborative researcher and educator with 16 years of full-time private practice experience limited to periodontics; 13 years as a part-time and 23 years as a full-time educator at two different academic health centers. Authored or co-authored 185 peer-reviewed articles in a variety of basic science and clinical science journals. Taught classes in general histology, oral histology, histopathology and periodontics at the undergraduate dental student level and microbiology, bone biology and cellular biology at the graduate level.

Accomplishments

Editor-at-Large and Editor Emeritus of Ground Rounds in Oral-Systemic Medicine (2005-09); Member of Editorial Advisory Board of Dimensions in Dental Hygiene (2002-05) and Journal of Implant and Advanced Clinical Dentistry (2008-14); Member of Peer Review Panel for Journal of Periodontal Research (2008-12) and Journal of Periodontology (2009-14). Presented over 200 programs at regional, national and international professional meetings.

As PI, Co-PI or Senior Investigator, received $3.3 million in funded research grants over a 25 year period. Successfully mentored 3 Ph.D. (Oral Biology) candidates; 39 M.S. (Oral Biology) candidates; and served on the M.S. (Oral Biology) committee of 26 candidates and 16 M.S. (Dental Hygiene Education) candidates. Recipient of the Outstanding Periodontal Educator Award (2012), awarded by the American Academy of Periodontology. Recipient of a Special Citation for Service (2015) in support of the American Academy of Periodontology.

Induction into the Order of Military Medical Merit (2004) following 28 years of federal service in both the U. S. Navy and U. S. Army Reserves. Interests lie in the areas of teaching and mentoring graduate students, development of leadership skills, manuscript development and scientific writing, editing of scientific manuscripts, and incorporation of good clinical practices in periodontal and oral health research.
